Abstract
Charge Coupled Devices (CCDs) have been available commercially for several years and have been designed into several aerial imaging systems. In most cases, the resolution achievable has been limited by the CCD element size, which has in turn been limited by the available MOS fabrication technology. Recent advances in fabrication technology allow the fabrication of much smaller devices so the system designer must now ask what the optimum element size for the CCD is. Three simple analyses from different view-points are presented here. All indicate that for typical long-range aerial reconnaissance missions, the size is in the neighborhood of 10 micrometers with the optimum only weakly dependent on the variables involved.
