Abstract
Computer systems capable of processing digital data from high-resolution microscopic imagery at very high data rates in an economically feasible manner are needed for prescreening clinical samples from a well-population for the early onset of disease and for examining biologic monitoring systems for adverse environmental effects. In this paper a description is given of the application of a microprocessor-based multiprocessor system (the Heidelberg POLYP polyprocessor) to chromosome aberration scoring in biologic dosimetry and to the screening of monolayer cell preparations such as those prepared for cancer prescreening. The POLYP system is characterized by the grouping of processors under software control, by multiple data buses, and by a syncbus that dynamically adjusts priority scheduling among processors, thus eliminating, for all practical purposes, the usual bus bandwidth limitations.
