29 August 2022 Deformable Mirror Technology Development at ESO – From open-loop to eXtreme Adaptive Optics

Abstract
The second phase of the ESO program aiming at developing the Deformable Mirror (DM) technology requested by the Extremely Large Telescopes’ post-focal Adaptive Optics (AO) has been kicked-off end of 2020. A development contract has been granted to ALPAO to deliver a scale-one prototype of a 64x64 actuator DM compliant with the high temporal, thermal and mechanical stability requested by open-loop AO applications. In addition, a test facility allowing the full characterization of the expected DM stability has been assembled by ALPAO and is now available; it has been recently used to assess the performance of the first GRAVITY+ DM. Additionally, a new contract is in preparation to consolidate the technology requested to deliver DMs suitable for XAO systems and high contrast imaging, and the delivery of a scale-one prototype. This paper presents the status of the open-loop DM technology development and gives details about the soon-coming XAO DM activities.
