Abstract

As an interdisciplinary science, bioinformatics draws methods and resources from the following disciplines by extracting valuable information and patterns: computer science, which provides the hardware and software for analysis; molecular biology, which is the source of the data to be analyzed; and mathematics, where the algorithms for data analysis originate. Bioinformatics greatly benefits omics research. It improves our knowledge of biological systems and contributes to our deep understanding of the genomes, growth, and development of microorganisms, animals, and plants. Using bioinformatics, we can advance human welfare by revolutionizing breeding methods, developing new drugs, or creating novel treatments for diseases. This article outlines and theoretical underpinnings of bioinformatics, analyzes its applications in agriculture and medicine in detail, identifies its unsolved issues, and puts forwards corresponding suggestions.
