7 April 2023 Impact of pulse pileup on single- and multi-energy images from a clinical photon counting detector CT

Abstract
Our aim was to quantify the effects of pulse pileup on single- and multi-energy CT images from a commercial PCD-CT. A multi-energy CT phantom with 10 inserts was scanned at tube currents across the entire available range. Mean CT numbers were recorded and the CT number and noise ratios between low and high bin images were calculated. Results demonstrated that pulse pileup does not create noticeable artifacts or cause major CT number deviations with the variation in CT numbers being less than 10 HU for all images evaluated, indicating minimal impact on single- and multi-energy performance in current clinical PCD-CT.
