Abstract
Obesity is a major public health challenge in the United States. Over one-third of adults in the nation are identified as obese. This research focuses on the past and current status of anti-obesity medications and will thoroughly explore the development and utilization of marketed drugs. The result shows that to date, there are still a limited number of FDA-approved drugs, and their effectiveness remains limited. Despite the complexity of the field of potential drug treatments, the substantial cost, high financial risks, and long duration of clinical research and experiment trials act as barriers to novel drugs. Recent studies suggest that marketed drugs are underused due to the low number of obesity medicine specialists prescribing them and a lack of health insurance coverage for anti-obesity drug treatments. Nonetheless, the benefits of an ideal drug for the treatment of obesity are unquestionable. The urgent need for effective medications with minimal side effects continues to spark discoveries of novel mechanisms and drug treatments.
