Abstract
For the problem of obstacle detection of smart wheelchair on horizontal ground, an obstacle detection system was designed in this paper by using STM32 microcontroller which was based on multi-channel ultrasonic. The system mainly includes controller, ultrasonic module, LCD display module, voice alarm module and handle button module. The distance measurement accuracy of the ultrasonic module was improved with temperature compensation and digital processing of the echo signal. The RS485 bus was used to implement communication between the controller and multiple ultrasonic sensors. According to the ultrasonic information, the surrounding area of the wheelchair was divided into ten areas to distinguish the direction of obstacles. The real-time obstacle information was stored in the form of array, laying a foundation for the subsequent intelligent development. The experimental test shows that the designed system can achieve accurate distance measurement in the range of 26cm to approximately 250cm with a relative error of no more than 1%.
