Abstract
We developed a simple and sensitive spectrophotometry method for o-phenylenediamine (OPD) detection. This work, for the first time, introduced Fe-o-phenanthroline into the OPD detection and improved the sensitivity of the assay method. In the presence of OPD, Fe3+ reacted with OPD and obtained the products of OPD oxide and Fe2+. The resultant Fe2+ then reacted with o-phenanthroline and produced the Fe2+-o-phenanthroline complex. In the above two reactions, the products of OPD oxide and Fe2+-o-phenanthroline complex had two UV absorption peaks at 480 nm and 510 nm, respectively. By superimposing the two absorption peak heights as an amplification strategy, the detection sensitivity of OPD was greatly improved. The developed method performed a wide linear range of 2.22 × 10-5 mol/L to 22.2 × 10-5 mol/L, good selectivity and satisfactory recovery in tap water for OPD assay. The results indicated that this method could meet the selectivity requirements for environmental application and also was sensitive enough to detect OPD in the environmental samples.
