Abstract
This paper describes how high level, i.e. tactical, pilot knowledge can be represented, managed and used for real time decision making in a hostile environment. The basic knowledge unit is the action, which has a number of attributes, one of which is an executable algorithm. A number of actions that are combined in order to acheive a certain goal constitute a plan. Actions may be performed concurrently or sequentially. Plans are combined hierarchically as disjunctions of descendant plans. Selection and rejection of plans and actions for execution is done under continuous sensor data analysis by a dynamic scheduling mechanism. Our experience shows that all types of aircraft activities may be managed in this way, be it vehicle guidance, sensor information analysis, threat evaluation, navigation, combat or weapon control for military aircrafts. With this form of knowledge representation more functions can be automatized, as for example plan generation, selective information display, and supportive pilot aiding.
