Abstract
Many applications of high-power semiconductor lasers require a highly stable, single-mode, nearly diffractionlimited output beam. However, most existing devices tend to oscillate in several lateral modes. In the case of phased-array lasers, high-order supermodes with twin-lobed far-fields are usually dominant. Even when single-lobed operation is obtained, the far field is often much broader than the diffraction limit.
