Abstract
An algorithm is formulated for automatic real-aperture radar target recognition that is self- adaptive with respect to both the types and the number of backscatter measurements required for an optimum classification decision. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated by means of Monte-Carlo simulation studies using cross-section data for sets of five commercial aircraft obtained from a compact radar range. Analysis is made of the resulting performance of the adaptive algorithm and compared to other techniques. Results show significant performance advantages through the use of adaptive, sequential techniques.
