25 August 1992 Subpixel resolution of targets in imagery from mosaic detector arrays

Abstract
We describe a technique for digitally processing a sequence of images obtained with a staring mosaic detector array to permit the resolution of features smaller than the spacing between individual detector elements. It is based on combining the sequence of images to obtain an effective higher spatial sampling rate and Nyquist cutoff frequency, and then deconvolving the finite size of the detector elements as well as other sources of blurring. Application of the technique to surveillance imagery obtained in fixed stare, target autotrack, and pushbroom scanning modes is addressed. We provide a theoretical description of the sub-pixel resolution technique, the results of a simulation study, and a demonstration using experimental data.
