Abstract
Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy has been used to examine conformational changes of calmodulin (CaM) by metal-ion binding. It has been found that the amide-I mode and the COO- stretching modes are markers for investigating the effects of metal- ion binding on CaM. These modes indicate that the effect of Mg2+ on CaM is different from that of Ca2+, and that the effects of Sr2+ and Cd2+ on CaM are similar to but not identical with that of Ca2+. This result suggests that the metal -COO- interaction is one of the important factors regulating the 3-D structure of CaM.
