Abstract
This paper describes a method for improving convergence of actuator or damper placement algorithms that employ randomized search techniques. An easily computed scalar measure of effectiveness is calculated for each possible location independently from damper properties. This quantity is then used to weight the random selection or mutation. Simulated annealing or genetic search algorithms optimizing damper placement to minimize RMS displacement benefit from the weighted selection. Two models of controlled structures testbeds are used to show improvements in convergence. Optimal or near-optimal sets of five member dampers are found in fewer iterations and with greater frequency using the new method.
