Abstract
Fiber-optic sensors have been applied for measuring mechanical deformations in a variety of configurations. Fiber-optics has the potential of very high resolution measurements. However, in many situations like in detection of catastrophic events a large dynamic range rather than a high resolution is required. In the case of fiberglass reinforced composite materials the critical elongations are on the order of 0.1 -0.5%.
