Abstract
The interactive graphics system presented in this paper is designed and implemented for constructing hierarchical interactive graphics and animations. The system is based on an interactive, object-oriented data model which we call the SSM model (shape view, structural view, messages). The model states that each object appearing in graphics and animation sequences should have two views, a structural view and a shape view, and that the user can model and manipulate objects by sending messages. The interactive graphics system allows the user to create two views of an object without programming. In addition, the system allows two-view objects to be manipulated at different hierarchical levels and object behaviors to be described at the interactive level, task-command level or user-scripting level. The structural view, once created using a structure editor, is used as a multiple tool which assists the user in creating interactive graphics and animations. The viewer can interactively view the information defined in each node of the structural view.
