Abstract
CO lasers have potential advantages over CO2 lasers due to the 5-6micrometers wavelength due the ability to transmit the energy through fiber-optic cables at powers < 100W and reduced plasma effects for welding applications. This paper describes the results obtained on a fast axial flow CO laser developed within EUREKA Project EU113 capable of operating at continuous output powers of 2.5kW for welding of mild steel. The results have shown that the CO laser has advantages in terms of weld penetrations achieved at low speeds at power levels of <2kW and less dependence on the type of shielding gas than a CO2 laser.
