Abstract
First, the factors that degrade the beam quality of high average power Nd:YAG lasers are analyzed. Especially the optical asymmetry of Nd:YAG rod under high power pumping is experimentally verified. A novel resonator--the four mirrors resonator is introduced, which has two mechanisms of beam quality improvement: the image-rotating and interference filtering. Experimental results show obviously the effect of beam quality improvement of the new resonator compared with its equivalent plane-parallel resonator under the same pumping power.
