Abstract
It was found that the odd (anti-symmetric) modes of a laser cavity can be effectively suppressed by using a lossy inverse external cavity coupled to the main cavity. This mode-control technique is particularly useful for high- aspect-ratio laser resonators used in, for example, waveguide lasers and laser diode arrays. The effect is analyzed in the limit of geometric optics.
