Abstract
We define local space and wave number quantities and apply them to wave propagation in dispersive media. An exact expression is obtained for the spreading of a propagating pulse. We show that while the pulse must eventually spread to infinity, it can contract for certain times. An exact criteria is given in terms of the covariance of the pulse. An exactly calculable example is presented and used to verify and illustrate the results. Also, we discuss the behavior of a transient at a given position. We propose that the local quantities, instantaneous frequency, group delay, and their respective local standard deviations are good characterizers and classifiers. We present some recent preliminary experimental results of Loughlin, Groutage, and Rohrbaugh showing the importance of instantaneous frequency and bandwidth for the characterization of transients.
