Abstract
The planimetric layers of the IGN cartographic database, namely the transportation and hydrographic networks, have to be updated annually. This application needing a fast and reliable production process, the potential use of high resolution satellite such as the forthcoming SPOT 5 had to be evaluated. This study used three test sites in France representing three different types of landscape. The networks were extracted using on screen monoscopic viewing of CNES 5 m panchromatic and 10 m multispectral simulations, and compared with the corresponding networks of the database; topographic maps at scale 1/25,000 were used as a complementary reference for the objects interpreted on the simulations but not included in the database. The results showed a clear lack of reliability of the SPOT 5 simulations, whether panchromatic or multispectral, for the interpretation of hydrography. Some promising results were obtained on the roads network, which have to be confirmed with an operational study on larger test sites. Satellite imagery is anyhow likely to remain a complementary asset for map updating in the near future.
