Abstract
Frame Relay is a rapidly growing service offering from all the major telecommunications carriers. Managing the growth and topology of such networks is a very challenging problem which requires modeling the traffic being loaded on the network. This paper describes the development of a three- state traffic model with hyper-exponentially distributed off times. It is shown that this model can be bit to match actual traffic statistics collected from the Management Information Base of a large Frame Relay network, whereas the commonly used two-state traffic model cannot. A rapid method of setting the model parameters by approximating the operation of the Leaky Bucket algorithm is also described.
