21 May 1999 Truncated projection computer tomography and objects of annular support

Abstract
Truncated Projection Computer Tomography (TPCT) is an imaging method that, in contrast to conventional CT, collects projection data along only a segment of each integration path. We examine three aspects of TPCT in this article. First, we present computer simulations of data acquisition and image reconstruction for TPCT. The reconstruction algorithm is iterative and sometimes referred to as the Algebraic Reconstruction Technique or ART. Failings of the technique, when used in this application, motivate our examination of objects with annular support. We find that, for a rect truncation window, TPCT naturally segments an object whose support is a disk into annular sub- objects. Finally, we introduce an analytical TPCT reconstruction formula. This reconstruction formula amounts to inversion of the incomplete Radon transform.
