Abstract
This paper summarizes research work combined by academic and commercial organizations concerned with interoperable distributed information technology (IT) applications. Although the application focus is distributed modeling and simulation (M&S) the results and findings are in general easily applicable to other distributed mission operations. The core idea of this paper is to show the necessity of applying open standards for component description, implementation, and integration accompanied by aligned management processes and procedures to enable continuous interoperability for legacy and M&S components of the live, virtual, and constructive domain within USAF Joint Synthetic Battlespace (JSB). The applied methods are derived from the Extensible Modeling and Simulation Framework (XMSF) and the Model Driven Architecture (MDA) ensuring reuse, composability, and orchestration of heterogeneous components to fulfill user-driven requirements for persistent and ad-hoc IT federations.
