Abstract
A smart sensor network is composed of a number of sensor nodes to extract meaningful and actionable information to system users in a timely, practical and intuitive manner. It requires sophisticated and geospatially-distributed infrastructures, centralized supervision, and deployment of large-scale security and surveillance networks to provide a 24/7 and all weather security operation in heavily-populated environments as well as restricted areas. Technically, development of sensor networks requires advanced technologies from four different areas: sensing technology, communication network, on-board Digital Signal Processing (DSP) capability, and sensing data management. These four key technologies have practical difficulties in various areas including communication covertness, network discovery, control and routing, collaborative signal and information processing, tasking and querying, and data management and security. In this paper, a brief history of sensor network development will be addressed first. Then technology trends and impacts of the sensing networks will be reviewed. This paper also describes the concept, design guideline and industrial standards of sensor networks which have been made viable by the convergence of sensor technology, wireless communications, digital electronics, and sensing system management to make all types of sensors, transducers and sensor data discoverable, accessible, manageable, and useable via the Web.
