Mammograms from patients with surgically proven adenocarcinomas or fibrocystic disease were analysed using a scanning microdensitometer. The optical density curves of the radiographically demonstrable lesions were isolated from the remainder of the breast tissue and a ratio was developed relating the total mass curve of a lesion compared to the total mass curve of a circumscribed rectangle around the lesion. Based upon these ratios, the initial results show that this technique correctly distinguished between 16 cases of adenocarcinoma versus 17 cases of fibrocystic disease. Three additional cases were incorrectly diagnosed as carcinomas; two were fibroadenomas and the third was a large, benign intraductal papilloma. Further studies may prove density evaluation of mammogram lesions will be a reliable method for the diagnosis of breast cancer.
