Abstract

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women today. At the present time, one out of 15 American women will develop breast cancer at some time. The American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute have established 27 Breast Cancer Detection Demonstration Centers to screen and follow 270,000 women by history, physical examination, mammography and thermography. The present interim policy with regard to screening is enumerated together with preliminary data on two years of screening and detection and radiation exposure monitoring. During the first two years, some 1083 cancers have been discovered. The average radiation exposure from various mammographic machines is approximately one rad. There was an approximate 30 percent reduction in radiation exposure during the first year. Mammography alone detected some 45 percent of the cancers in the 30-49 year age group.
