Abstract
Two expressions may be employed to calculate the value of the longitudinal focal displacement of the reflected beam from an absorbing medium for both s and p polarization. Our calculations show that Fp is positive (the p wave shifts along the reflected direction) and Fs is negative (the s wave shifts along the opposite direction). Assuming that the extinction coefficient is zero, then the two expressions can be simplified to the forms given by Chan and Tamir, which fit only for the nonabsorbing medium.
