Eigenmode expansion is used to find the transmission, reflection, and radiation from a step junction in dielectric slab waveguide. Although the eigenmode expansion is applied to a slab waveguide enclosed by metallic box, it is shown that from the amplitude of the ‘‘radiation-like’’ modes of this waveguide the radiation characteristics of the open waveguide can be found successfully. Several examples are presented to confirm the validity of this procedure.
