1 June 1999 Mixing-rod power coupling for large-core polymer optical fibers
Author Affiliations +
Low-cost power splitting and star-coupling using large-core polymer optical fibers (POFs) are studied. Tapered and untapered mixing rods are used to form 1 x 7 and 7 x 7 couplers. Excess loss and coupling uniformity of a 15 cm length tapered mixing-rod based 1 x 7 coupler are measured to be 1.72 dB and 1.0 dB. The average excess loss and uniformity for a 18 cm mixing-rod length 7 x 7 star-coupler are 1.38 dB and 1.91 dB, respectively.
