Abstract
A structure comprising a funnel-shaped waveguide (FSW) is proposed to achieve semiunidirectional transmissions of light. When light is coupled from the wide end and propagates to the fine end of the FSW, the output light in the fine end will be condensed; when light is coupled in the fine end and propagates to the wide end of the FSW, the output light in the wide end will be diffused. Therefore, output lights from different ends of the FSW will have different optical intensities. Furthermore, an array of the FSWs can be used to construct a thin film, which has the semiunidirectional transmission function, as the coupled lights and output lights from the two sides of the film are different. The semiunidirectional propagation and optical imaging of the FSWs have been verified with simulations. The FSWs have compact structure and can be integrated in photonic chips and optical information processing system. The FSW film can be also used for the one-way light shielding in privacy protection.
