The next generation of high throughput satellites will use Q/V frequency band for information processing and transmitting. With the increase of frequency and the limitations of the device itself , traditional microwave technology couldnot satisfy the requirements of communication satellite payloads in large-bandwidth, high-rate and low-mass, while microwave photonics technology shows great advantages in these areas. This paper gives an overview of the development of high-throughput satellite and microwave photonics technology in Europe, and introduces the key technology of microwave photonics communication—the microwave photonic frequency conversion technology. Based on the research progress of this technology at domestic and foreign, a Q/V band microwave photonics mixer for satellites application is designed. Comparation of advantages and disadvantages for different projcet designs is presented.
