China has developed two miniaturized synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites called HiSea-1 and Chaohu-1. These satellites, which were launched in December 2020 and February 2022, respectively, can obtain high-resolution sea surface wind fields in day and night conditions. In a recent study, the Cross-Calibrated Multi-Platform (CCMP) wind vector, SAR look direction, and SAR incidence angle were used as inputs into CMOD5.N to output an expected σ0. The wind field was then retrieved from a matrix determined by SAR-measured σ0 and the expected σ0. This method was applied to 90 HiSea-1 and Chaohu-1 SAR images. The retrieved wind speeds were compared with the ECMWF Reanalysis v5 (ERA5) reanalysis data. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) and mean bias error (MBE) were found to be 0.98 m/s and -0.02 m/s, respectively.
