SC692: Non-Ionizing Irradiation Interactions with Biologic Tissue
The immediate and delayed effects of the interactions of non-ionizing irradiation with biologic materials are determined by their anatomic organization, physiology, chemical composition and physical properties. Qualitative and quantitative pathologic analytic methods including 1) gross and microscopic anatomic analyses and 2) histochemistry and immunohistochemistry will be described and discussed as important investigational tools. These methods can be used to 1) identify normal and abnormal tissues. 2) identify experimental end points characteristic of the irradiation/tissue interactions, 3) determine the mechanisms of irradiation/tissue interaction effects, 4) map the extent and severity of the effects and 5) display the dynamics of irradiation effects and delayed tissue reactions over time. Lastly, practical instructions for preparing biologic materials for pathologic examination will be presented.
